Samsung Series 9 np900x4c with 16GB RAM

I mentioned in a previous post that you could upgrade your laptop's RAM to 16GB. Well, see for yourself.

If you're wondering why my 15" SS9 has the Samsung SSD, it's because I stole it from my old 13".

  1. Do you think the ram could be upgraded on the 13.3" version as well?

    1. Unfortunately it can't be... unless you have the pre-2012 model.

Here's my investigation of the 13":

    2. Wait, there's a pre-2012 13" model that might take 16GB? Which? X3A will not post with 16GB AFAICT.

  2. I upgraded my NP900X4C-A03US a few days ago to 16GB as well. I found some Mushkin RAM that runs at 1.28V instead of the 1.5V that the Samsung-manufactured RAM that came with the computer does -- the JEDEC timing parameters are the same. The lower operating voltage will help with battery life:

    1. Great idea! Any way you could do a run-down test & post the new battery usage with the 1.28V RAM?

    3. Further note: the X3A will work at 16GB if you have at least one of these modules. (Evidently a power/posting issue).

  3. How's the Mushkin RAM working out for you T.? I have the np900x4c-a01us and thinking of getting the Mushkin 16gb ram set or the Komputer set Will Stone's recommended on Amazon.

  4. I wouldn't get the Komputer set on Amazon. Had it installed and running but then it crapped out a week later. Ordering Mushkin RAM recommended by T... as it matches all specs of the RAM that came with the computer.

  5. One simple question,
The AES-NI instructions are working for you? I can't get it working in Truecrypt or detected by CPU-Z..

    3. Even Intel Processor ID Utility don't show support for AES in mine.
      NP900X4D with i5 3317U here.
Looks like a BIOS issue, no updates till now...

For the record, in NP900X4D Samsung changed aluminium black for magnesium silver, RAM for 1 x 4gb A-DATA 1600 (and blocked purposely AES-NI???)

    1. G'day Nelson, I upgraded with this RAM last week along with the Crucial M4 256GB mSata drive and it worked perfectly.

  7. I just ordered 2 8Gb crucial sticks to try this very thing. Have you ever thought about swapping in an i7-3520M CPU? According to cpu-world they are compatible. Has anyone tried this? It would be awesome to go from 1.9 Ghz to 2.9 Ghz with this upgrade.

    2. Hi Steve, i would love to know if you were successful. I love this laptop and dont feel the need to spend 1500 on another latpop that i might not love as much..so being able to upgrade the cpu would be awesome as I have already upgraded to 1TB SSD & 16GB RAM..with an i7 and the other upgrades it would get a renewal of life for another 2+ yrs..
